Watchdog groups are calling on Attorney General Roy Cooper to open an investigation into the practices of Duke Energy.
NC WARN filed a complaint with Cooper’s office that said Duke Energy could be in violation of its corporate charter.
The group has also started to air an ad urging people to contact Cooper.
NC WARN is calling on the power company to phase out fossil fuels and stop blocking clean energy competition.
Duke Energy is the nation’s largest utility polluter. It’s based in Charlotte. Therefore, the people of this state must take charge and assert our authority,” said Jim Warren with NC WARN.
Duke Energy spokesman Jeff Brooks called the accusations “meritless.”
“Unfortunately, this is another in a string of meritless accusations and gimmicks that this group purveys to the public in trying to bring about their version of change and we feel like really all it’s doing is draining taxpayer dollars,” Brooks said.
Advocates are calling on the attorney general to take Duke Energy to court.
Cooper’s office said it will look into the complaint.
