Here’s the letter we sent to the EPA’s Inspector General signed by 130 organizations calling for investigation of our complaint to the Inspector General regarding underreporting of methane leakage from natural gas operations.
Twenty-one states and the District of Columbia are represented (national and multistate organizations listed in bold), as well as 5 other countries. We’re grateful for the support and awed by all the hard work being done around the world to stop the ravages of fossil fuels.
June 23, 2016
Inspector General Arthur A. Elkins, Jr.
U.S. Environmental Protection Agency
Office of Inspector General
We, the undersigned, call on the EPA Office of Inspector General to expedite an investigation into the allegations regarding scientific fraud in the underreporting of methane leakage from the natural gas industry, as outlined in the NC WARN complaint dated June 8, 2016.
Frontline communities impacted by methane emissions are counting on the EPA to effectively regulate the natural gas industry. In order to protect public health and safety and to avoid catastrophic climate change, we urge you to do all in your power to reduce methane emissions.
The urgency of this situation is conveyed thusly by Dr. Robert Howarth of Cornell University: “The climate responds very quickly to methane, so if we reduce our methane emissions from shale gas now, we will slow the rate of global warming … in fact, that is the only way to avoid irreversible harm to the climate.”
