Climate
change is causing extensive damage at an accelerating rate. The Arctic is melting rapidly
– summer sea ice could be gone in just 5 years.
Weather disasters are soaring.
Millions of people are suffering. And the world’s top scientists
recently amplified their call for urgent action to reduce greenhouse gases –
but Duke Energy wants to build another coal-fired plant at Cliffside, west of
Charlotte.

Six
million additional tons of CO2 annually would largely negate statewide efforts
to cut greenhouse gases.
·
The
new unit would double – to 21 million gallons per day – the water lost to
evaporation, and increase air pollution and the mercury deposited into our
lakes and rivers. Duke Energy calls this a
“modernization.”

Even
if completed, Cliffside’s reliability is questionable due to the Broad River’s reduced ability
to provide cooling water.
·
Cliffside’s
cost estimate has already doubled – to $2.4 billion – and would likely rise
further.

this new coal plant is the best thing North Carolina can do to slow global
