ASSERTING the PUBLIC VOICE in
NC:
There is increasing
urgency to prevent Duke Energy’s
new global warming machine
EXPERTS
DEMAND ACTION: The global
scientific community just redoubled its warning that climate change is
accelerating, and the world’s top experts are calling for urgent action to
reduce greenhouse gases. “Extreme weather conditions will be more
common. Tropical storms will be more frequent and intense. Heat waves and
heavy rains will affect some areas, raising the risk of wildfires and the
spread of diseases. Elsewhere, drought will degrade cropland and spoil the
quality of water sources … Climate change will affect poor countries most
but will be felt everywhere.” (links at end)
WEATHER
DISASTERS ARE ALREADY SOARING: British-based charity
Oxfam released a new report this week, "Climate Alarm," showing that
weather-related disasters have quadrupled over the last 20 years, mostly
due to global warming, and that 250 million people are already suffering
each year. “This is no freak year. It follows a pattern of more
frequent, more erratic, more unpredictable and more extreme weather events
that are affecting more people.”
GOOD
NEWS: Yet another new U.S. coal-fired power plant was cancelled
this week, this one by Washington state regulators – due to climate
concerns. … “among a string of recent setbacks for new polluting power
plants nationwide … as concerns rise about climate change.”
But Duke Energy’s
Jim Rogers still wants to build a massive coal-fired power plant near
Charlotte.
Stopping this new coal plant is
the best thing [North
Carolina] can do
to slow global warming.

PLEASE TAKE ACTION
– AND LET US KNOW
1)
If you’ve already urged Duke Energy CEO Jim Rogers to cancel the Cliffside
plant, please do it again and let us know.
ContactUs@duke-energy.com or
PO Box 1090, Charlotte, NC 28201-1090 (Please forward or blind copy to
ncwarn@ncwarn.org)
2)
If you’ve already encouraged FIVE people to contact Mr. Rogers, can you
please find five more – including elected officials?
3)
Demand the NC news media to withstand utility influence and do its job.
Most of the issues above are being underreported or entirely ignored.
Add your voice to
those from across the state who are calling on CEO Rogers to back up his
statements of concern about global warming. And tell him to stop his PR
team’s bogus claim that building Cliffside would be a “modernization”
project.
Tell him North
Carolina is ready to move ahead with proven efficiency and renewable energy
programs – the fastest way to cut greenhouse gases.
Pursuing new power plants is
squandering our chances to cut greenhouse gases.
