“Don’t Rush to Frack” Summit
Hosted by Clean Water for North Carolina
Deadline to register: Friday, September 2nd
Registration Fee: $15 per person
NC WARN, by developing RePowering NC, is hard at work seeking to phase out all dirty fossil fuel generated electricity in North Carolina by replacing it with renewables, conservation, efficiency and – all without new nukes.
Researchers at Cornell University found that leaking methane at various steps of shale gas’ life cycle leads to greenhouse gas emissions at least 20% greater than coal-fired electricity over a 20-year horizon. That fact, along with other damage caused by hydraulic fracturing, means we must also phase out all natural gas for electricity generation.
While NC WARN is organizing with the grassroots, county by county, to decrease our demand for dirty electricity, hydraulic fracturing is being pushed as an alternative in some counties of NC. Progress Energy recently announced it will replace coal fired power plants with new natural gas plants.
On September 10th at Central Carolina Community College in Pittsboro, Clean Water for North Carolina will be hosting a statewide fracking summit. NC WARN members are encouraged to come and learn about the issues surrounding hydraulic fracturing.
At the event, a hard-hitting lineup of speakers from far and wide will discuss economic, community and environmental impacts of fracking, the current situation in NC, and strategies moving forward.
Registration fee for the event is $15 per person. If space is still available after the September 2nd deadline, registration for remaining spots will be $25 per person.
